Question about Animal Abuse

Jason, a student from Long Island NY asked if we could speak to his class about animal abuse in puppy mills, puppy farms, pet stores etc.

Jason was doing research for a project on the subject and we would have loved to be there to talk with his class in person. Unfortunately because of commitments and obligations to our dogs and the long distance we were unable to be there in person so we recorded this message.

Thank you Jason for contacting us with your questions.

Some brief facts about Puppy Mills

The term, Puppy Mill is a slang term. It defines a place where dogs are bred for profit. Little or no thought is given to the health, temperament, or quality of the breeding dogs or offspring. A commercial breeding facility would be such a place.

Commercial breeding facilities are USDA regulated and the dogs are defined as livestock. Being the fact that they are livestock, they do not have to be cared for as we care for our personal pets. They live in small cages, or hutches much like a rabbit hutch and never stand on solid ground.

Many dogs live their entire lives like this with little human contact. When the dogs no longer “produce” they are usually destroyed.

We are here to answer any questions and or concerns you may have about adopting a dog from a rescue or shelter, please feel free to contact us anytime.

We will do our best to answer any questions you have, or will point you in the right direction if we do not know the answer. If you would like to know more about puppy mills in your state, please check out our Interactive State map here. This is a work in progress and updates are ongoing.

Thank You again Jason!
